How to Clean a Dishwasher Filter and Clear the Drain
Most dishwasher drain codes (LG OE, Whirlpool F9E1, GE C1/FTD) start with a dirty filter, a kinked hose, or a clogged air gap. This 10-minute routine covers all three.
Safety first: Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before you remove panels, filters or hoses. Turn off the water supply valves before you disconnect any hose, and keep a towel and shallow pan handy. Never work on wiring, gas lines or sealed refrigerator systems yourself.
Check your model: Filter and hose locations vary. Follow your manual where it differs.
Steps
- Turn the dishwasher off at the breaker or unplug it.
- Pull out the bottom rack and scoop out any standing water and debris.
- Twist the filter counterclockwise and lift it out. Careful, as stainless edges can be sharp.
- Scrub it under warm running water with a soft brush.
- Reinstall the filter until it locks.
- Under the sink, straighten the drain hose and move anything pressing on it.
- Pop off the air gap cap (if you have one) and clear debris; run the garbage disposal.
- New disposal? Make sure the knockout plug was removed.
Tips
- Clean the filter monthly.
- Use dishwasher detergent only. Dish soap causes suds and leaks.
