Samsung Washer 5C Error Code: What It Means & How to Fix It

5C = Water is not draining. 5C (or 5E) means the washer can't drain. Samsung lists the usual causes as a clogged debris filter, a frozen or kinked drain hose, or a drain hose set up wrong. Cleaning the filter is the first thing to try.

Can you fix it yourself? Yes

Also shown as: 5E

Check your model: Error codes can mean different things on different Samsung models. Find your model number (usually on a sticker inside the door or lid, or on the back) and confirm the code in your user manual.
Safety first: Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before you remove panels, filters or hoses. Turn off the water supply valves before you disconnect any hose, and keep a towel and shallow pan handy. Never work on wiring, gas lines or sealed refrigerator systems yourself.

How to fix Samsung Washer 5C

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Straighten the drain hose all the way to the drain.
  3. Front-loader: put towels and a shallow pan under the filter door, pull out the small emergency drain tube, drain the water, then unscrew the debris filter and clear out lint, coins and hair.
  4. Screw the filter back in firmly so it doesn't leak.
  5. Plug in and run a Rinse + Spin cycle.

Still showing 5C?

If the filter and hose are clear and it still won't drain, the drain pump may have failed. Contact Samsung service.

Repair or replace?

If the appliance is under warranty, call Samsung first, since a repair may be free. Out of warranty, a common rule of thumb is to compare the repair quote with the cost of a new unit and the appliance's age before deciding.
